Die amerikanische Serie „Masters of Horror“ wurde fürs Fernsehen produziert und zeigt einige der wichtigsten Regisseure des zeitgenössischen phantastischen Films, die sich mit Sujets des Horrors auseinandersetzen.
Mit zu der illustren Riege gehören neben John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper oder John Landis auch eher Insidern bekannte Namen wie Takashi Miike oder Mick Garris. Letzterer war auch Co-Produzent der Serie, die im amerikanischen Fernsehen bei „Showtime“ lief. Zwei Staffeln sind abgedreht, eine dritte ist in Planung. Hierzulande erschienen Teile davon als „Masters of Horror“-DVDs.
Der neueste Beitrag zur Reihe stammt vom Co-Produzenten Mick Garris selbst und basiert auf einer Novelle von keinem Geringeren als dem britischen Hellraiser-Schöpfer Clive Barker. Der Film trägt den Titel „Valerie on the stairs - Der Geist des Highberger House“.

Inhalt:
Highberger House ist ein Ort, an dem Autoren, die bisher noch kein Buch veröffentlicht haben, weitab von sämtlichen Ablenkungen leben und arbeiten können. Doch in dem Gebäude spuken mehr als nur die Seelen erfolgloser Schriftsteller: Der Geist einer schönen Frau wandelt durch die Gänge und schreit vor Angst und Sehnsucht. Und in den Wänden lebt ein Wesen, dem ihr Körper und ihre Seele gehören und das nun nach dem Blut seiner Schöpfer dürstet. Christopher Lloyd (ZURÜCK IN DIE ZUKUNFT), Tyron Leitso (HOUSE OF THE DEAD), Clare Grant (WALK THE LINE) und Tony Todd (CANDYMAN’S FLUCH) spielen die Hauptrollen. Allzu schnell wird klar, dass Valerie unter dem Bann des Dämons nicht nur leidet, sondern auch Lust empfindet – aber dass sie auch dazu fähig ist, mit Hilfe des Dämons ihr Leid in Aggression umzuwandeln...

Kritik:
„Valerie on the stairs“ hebt sich aus der Masse von mittelmäßigen Produktionen heraus. Dies liegt an mehreren Faktoren. Zum einen ist hier die Behutsamkeit der Inszenierung zu nennen. Mick Garris nimmt sich Zeit, seinen Protagonisten und seine Umgebung in Szene zu setzen. Dass dies innerhalb der kurzen Handlungsspanne gelingt, ist auch zum großen Teil durch die hervorragend besetzten Schauspieler zu erklären. Der zweite positive Aspekt ist die Story von Clive Barker. Clive besitzt die Fähigkeit aus scheinbar realen Situationen wirkliche Summen von phantastischen Energiesynergien herauszuschrauben, wie in der Idee von dem Heim für Autoren, deren Imaginationskraft sich in der Manifestation des Geistes und dessen Incubus niederschlägt.
Weiterhin ist die handwerkliche Seite ohne Makel. Die Kameraarbeit ist solide, die Schock-Szenen sitzen und werden mittels Sound-Effekten untermalt. Die vereinzelten Gore-Szenen sind nicht überrepräsentiert und passen sich stimmig in das Gesamtbild ein.
Die Schlussszene ist wahrhaft metaphorisch und rundet den positiven Eindruck ab.

SPECIAL-FEATURES gibt es einige, worunter ein großangelegtes “Making of” und ein Audiokommentar von Mick Garris gehört.

„Valerie on the Stairs - Der Geist des Highberger House” ist ein gelungener Beitrag zur Serie rund um die “Masters of Horror” und es gelingt sowohl dem Regisseur Mick Garris wie auch seinem exzellent besetztem Team ein glaubhaftes und in sich stimmiges Szenario zu erschaffen, das dem Geist der literarischen Vorlage in sich gerecht wird.
Die tolle Aufmachung als Metalpack verdient Lob und ist ein zusätzliches Kaufargument.
