Nachdem der rechtmäßige König von seinem neidischen Bruder durch Verrat abgesetzt und vertrieben werden konnte, herrscht Verfall auf der Königsburg. Nur noch eine sieche junge Frau namens Ela, ihr gelähmter Sohn Jemany und seine Tante Umbecca leben mehr schlecht als recht hier. Bis eines Tages Elas geliebter Bruder Tor, möglicherweise der Vater von Jemany, aus der Fremde zurückkehrt, wo er bei den Rebellen gegen den Usurpator kämpft. Die bigotte Umbecca traut ihm nicht. Doch nachdem Tor wieder gegangen ist, schickt er den zwergwüchsigen, stummen Barnabas aufs Schloß, und dieser bringt dem jungen Mann erstmal das Lesen und dann das Gehen bei. Denn Jemany träumt vom Fliegen - so wie in der Legende der Junge Riel (= Ariel, der Luftgeist), der die Welt vor einem Monster des Bösen rettete. Und dann wartet immer die fahle Straße, die in die Ferne führt.
Jemany hat Cata nur flüchtig kennengelernt; sie verspottete den "Krüppel". Cata ist die Tochter von Silas Wolveron, der einst auch mit dem Schloß zu tun hatte, nun aber als Eremit im Wildwald lebt. Cata nimmt sich in acht vor der Bande der Fünf, die im Dorf Irion unter dem Schloß ihr Unwesen treiben und zum Beispiel wehrlose Tiere qualvoll umbringen. Sie werden angeführt von Polty, der von seinem Vater, dem bigotten Arzt und Vertrauten von Umbecca, ständig verdroschen wird und so seinen Haß an Schwächeren ausläßt. Auch als die zigeunerhaften Vagras mit ihrer Karawane in Irion haltmachen und der Harlekin auftritt, treibt Polty sein Unwesen. Er stiehlt seinem Vater einen wertvollen Ring und macht sich aus dem Staub.
Der Autor hat dieser (unvollständigen) Handlung einen langen Prolog vorangesetzt, in der er das aktuelle Geschehen in einen riesigen zeitlichen Rahmen setzt, der bei der Erschaffung der Welt durch Orok beginnt. Der Gott schuf sich unterschiedliche Kinder, darunter auch ein böses, doch sie sollten Frieden ahlten, solange sich alle ihre fünf Kristalle im Orokon-Kristall befanden. Wenig später hat der Böse seinen Stein herausgenommen, was auch die anderen nicht zögern läßt, es ihm gleichzutun. Schreckliche Untaten werden begangen, die Völker der fünf Götter werden zerstreut, und die Zeit des Sühneopfers bricht an. Die Prophezeiung aber besagt, das sie durch ein neues Zeitalter abgelöst wird, sobald der rote Schlüssel zum Orokon gefunden und alle fünf Kristalle wieder an ihren rechtmäßigen Platz gesetzt werden.
Es sieht ganz so aus, als sei Jemany das geweissagte Kind, das dies vollbringen wird.
